Task of the day, May 16

Like gazillions of other mothers and grandmothers around the country I am preparing for tomorrow. May 17th is our national holiday and we’ll get all dressed up and watch the children’s parade, talking to friends and family, eating good food and hoping for clear skies.

I have been ironing daughter’s bunad shirt like I have done since she was little. My mother in law made the shirt for her for her confirmation. Look at the collar; teeny tiny white stitches on white linen. Isn’t it just gorgeous! You’ll find more pictures of the bunad (lovingly embroidered by her mother aka me) here and here.

  5. What a lovely tradition! We have traditional dresses like that too but not very many women have them. They can be used on celebrations like Midsummer or folk dances, big birthdays and weddings, not on our independence day in December.

  6. I have been to a marriage in Norway and every body had traditional costumes. It was so beautiful and so meaningful, especially when I learned that the women of the house prepare the costumes. I would like to be with you and see the parade.
