When grandson was younger, I made all kinds of fun patches for his pants, but now they simply do not last more than a day or two. These days all patches are made from denim; real jeans denim that can take sliding on the knees across floors and schoolyards and soccer fields. With two boys around, there is often a need for a quick patch or two, so I keep a pair of husband's worn out jeans close at hand. I just cut off a piece from a part of the jeans that has the colour I need, and trim it to size. The fabric will fit most shades of jeans; we’ve got the low-wear parts, the abused parts,
and the wrong side.
Little boy's pants have skinny legs, so twisting and turning them under the presser foot is always an issue. Previously I have used fusible web or pins (that do nothing to improve the situation) to hold the patches in place, but now that I have acquired this fabulous fabric glue pen, I just had to give it a go.
Make a glue line around the hole (see the bright blue?)
and around the edge of the wrong side of the patch.
Glue in place. You may have to apply more glue to get it to stick.
Secure the patch properly; I zigzag stitch the edges, and do quite a bit of back-and-forth-ing to secure the edges of the hole underneath.
Indeed, the Sewline fabric glue pen works perfectly for temporarily attaching patches-in-process. Now, what else can I glue…
I was supposed to take a lifesaver’s class this afternoon as it has been a while since I
refreshed my lifesaving skills, but it got cancelled. Bummer. The class was particularly aimed at those caring
for small children, so it would have been interesting although hopefully never, ever
useful.

My Friday Night Sew In became more of a Weekend Mend In, but who cares, I got some long overdue mending done. I do enjoy mending clothes. Period. Kids’ clothes, daughter’s, mine, husband’s, nieces’, it doesn’t matter. Giving our clothes a longer life, being frugal, being creative, whatever - it’s all a labor of love.
On my list this morning was daughter’s favorite sweater, 2 pair of grandson’s pants and a wool pants, and one of my jeans and wool socks. All done now and it feels good.
I have a hard time leaving my sewing room without doing something quilting related, so I added a little embellishment to the last of my chick quilts which I thought was done, but it wasn’t so now it has a couple of experimental free motion stitched flowery creations.
I was totally sure I would use red orange and bright pink yarn to pick up the colours of the beak and feet,
but it did not look right, so I went with the light purple and green. Much better.
I also did a little no-sew-mending in the morning before kindergarten. Grandson’s snow pants had a big tear on the knee and the back, and I did not want to stitch it as it would make holes in the water resistant fabric. Duct tape to the rescue, I was a duct tape virgin so I was surprised to see that it was still intact after a day of play.
The only complaint is that it doesn’t have a band aid effect. The tear will still be there when I remove the tape. Won’t it?
