Little friend

This is my best friend when I’m doing these.
They are made of silicone (I think) and will adjust to your finger like a glove, a very thick and sturdy one that is. I have several in different colours all spread around my various sewing kits. No holes in my middle finger and blood splatter on my quilts thank you very much!

  1. I have that exact same thimble and it's been my favorite since the summer! Before, I had a metal one that I used for 10 years. It turned my finger green, and my husband used to tease me about it. It worked well, though...until I went to start hand quilting a baby quilt and the needle punched right through the thimble! I always put my needle head in the same little indent on the tip of the thimble so I guess it got a little too worn! I do love that silicone one, though...and my finger isn't green anymore!

  2. I've never seen a silicone thimble before... but I have seen thousands (yes!) of thimbles in just the past week... I was helping my uncle clear out my grandmother's house after she moved into a nursing home. What does one do with a collection of 2,000 thimbles??? I think I am going to borrow your picture if that is ok for my blog... let me know... V

  3. I love my silicone thimble too!! I tried for years to get used to a hard one (metal or wood) and couldn't do it. I ended up using several layers of white medical tape to make a cap for my finger. That worked well actually but then I saw my sister using one of these silicone ones. They're at Zeller's in Canada. They come as a set of three sizes in one package for $3. I bought 3 sets immediately, 2 to give away.

  4. I have never gotten used to using a thimble, maybe because I have fat fingers. I will have to try one of these, it may just work. Great tidbit, thanks. xox Corrine

  5. I've never seen one like this before. I've never used a thimble before either but this looks like it has possibilities.

  7. Never managed to work with a thimble, but this one looks great. I tried a silicone one from clover, put the tip is made from metal and it doens’t work for me either.
Is this one from a special brand?

  8. The silicone thimble looks great. I currently have holes in my fingers from hand appliqueing batik fabric with steam and seal on the back and up to three layers of fabric in places, ouch!! I've tried metal and leather thimbles without success, they feel so clumsy. I usually get on okay with the stick-on ones but not for this heavy job. What make are the silicone ones please?

  9. I just had a poke around to see if I still had the packaging but I don't. I found someone who sells them on Etsy though these ones aren't exactly like the one I & Mrs.Moen have: http://amygurumi.com/2009/09/new-silicone-thimbles-available-on-etsy/ This lady talked about them on her blog. (http://kathleencrowley.blogspot.com/2008/11/joy-of-thimble.html) and said they were available at Britex in California (http://www.britexfabrics.com/storelocation.html)
