Oh No! I am naked!!

Got your attention there, did I:) No, this is not about recurring nightmares or any nasty business, but the name of my little wintery quilt.

It was a quite old idea of mine that finally came to life. I find it interesting how a few black dots make us think of a snowman as being dressed, and how could I depict a snowman just realizing he was dot-less. Well, here he is.

The snowmen are made as one layer upon layer piece on a base of blue felt and stitched onto the background.

First I made an elaborate layer upon layer background, but I set that aside. There wasn’t much point in putting so much work into a background that would barley show. I am sure I’ll find a way to use it later.

I thought I could share a little tip for free motion stitching lines, like snowmen’s arms, onto busy and hard to mark backgrounds:
Place a piece of translucent paper on top of the appliqué, and draw the lines.

I have used what is known as matpapir (paper for packing sandwiches).

Pin the paper to the quilt and free motion stitch on the marked lines. Short stitches make removing the paper easier, and so does running the tip of a needle along the stitched lines. Carefully remove the paper, and stitch the lines again, 2-3 times.

We had our first winter storm of the season yesterday, and it was a bit scary driving along the fjord to pick up the boys at school and kindergarden. Later in the afternoon the city got closed, the bridges got closed, the ferries stopped running, leaving husband stranded on the other side of the fjord for the better part of the evening, and we were warned against going outside.  Hopefully I have managed to drop the boys off despite wind and snow before you read this, or I’ll be having company at home all day. I have a few projects planned, but it wouldn’t be all bad, you know.)

Thanks for stopping by!

  5. The naked snowman is such a clever idea and well conveyed. I have a friend who put a bright red bra on her snow woman one year--IRL, not on a quilt, that is. I imagine the neighbors got quite a giggle.

  9. Sweet snowmen quilt! They look soooo cute! Come over to my blog and take a look at mine! I have taken a liking to me in the last couple of years? Sounds like you had some serious snow. It got so warm in Charlotte today I had to put on shorts. It was in the high 70s. In a couple of nights that will change. Well stay safe and warm!

  11. I used to dream that I was at school in just my slip and rollers in my hair. I would wake up in the morning without any curls (this was before hot rollers or curling irons). Your naked snowman brought back the memories. Very cute!
